Why The Phantom Tollbooth?

Susan asked me why I named this blog as I did. She also was curious as to my choice of avatars. Here is your answer Susan:

It's none of your damn business! Was giving you eight private details of my life not enough! Does anything ever sate your curiosity! For the love of God!

Of course, I jest. I'm honored you have wondered these things about my blog Susan. It's a fair question and here is your boring answer:

Because I could not think of anything else.

That's pretty much it. I was at work when I created my blog and just took the first thing that popped into my head.

I have always been fascinated with stories of mysterious portals that would transport people to strange and distant worlds. It started with that story about a lion, a witch and a certain wardrobe that my dad read to me in my youth. The Phantom Tollbooth was one of my favorite books from childhood. It could just have easily been A Wrinkle in Time I guess.

If I had to do it over again, I would probably pick a title with the name Big Lick somehow involved. Big Lick was the original name of my town of Roanoke. When I first started blogging I was not sure what direction I wanted my blog to take. Finally I decided to focus on humor (for those who just said to themselves- Humor? Really?- feel free to bite me.) I think something with Big Lick in the title just screams humor. Or maybe porn.

I didn't choose an avatar until later. I had lots of ideas including, as you mentioned Susan, Tock from the book. In the end, I just picked Barney Fife because I was tired of looking.

But wait...there's more!

A while back I posted about the work of photojournalist Will Yurman. For those interested, he has added an updated photograph of Serena.

Well, aren't you special? Nobody's asked me yet about "Ninja Of The Mundane."

I like goofy random name-making. I once invented, for comedic purposes, a Christian punk-rock band called "Rahab's Cameltoe."

I always thought Don Knotts turned in a searing, angry, brooding DeNiro-esque tour de force as a good journalist pushed too far in "The Ghost And Mr. Chicken." He would have made an excellent Oskar Schindler, too.

Thank you for explaining the name! I was wondering, but figured it was an inside joke.

Or, you just couldn't find your way to work by the usual route.

Thank you for sharing the Will Yurman site...there are few photographers that can capture the visceral essence of a subject as well as he seems to be able to do.

Ahhhhh, I see. Sort of.

I think a blog called the Big Lick would get a few readers expecting SOMETHING ELSE!!

Although, you could put your dog pictures on it and at least, I'D get it!!

I love the Phantom Tollbooth- one of my favourite childhood novels.
I saw it on TV the other night... the film is so embued with 60s idealism!

I found a copy of The Phantom Tollbooth at the Salvation Army a couple of months ago and it has the same cover as the you pictured. I haven't read it yet. Nor have I ever seen the movie.

Big Lick. Yep, that would've been a good name. Maybe Big Lick Blob.

If you were close enough I'd whack you on the head!!...none of my business...grumble, grumble, grumble...

That's it? No big story behind it? I'm Soooo glad you didn't go with the Big Lick...icky!

Will Yurman is wonderful! Thanks so much for pointing us that way.

My old blog name was "Basement Epiphanies" because I couldn't think of a name. I have the worst time trying to name a blog.

Hmmm. Now why did I name my blog who-really-cares-anyway?

I guess it's a tributeto my over-riding sense of honesty!

Yeah, dat's it! Dat's da ticket!!!

I crack up every time I see good ol' "Barn" staring out at me...

I assumed you were just a Phantom Tollbooth fan, and who owuldn't be. Fantastic book, one of my all-time favorites (along with A Wrinkle in Time). And Barney was a hoot - such a goober and yet so endearing.

Ninja- I just watched the Ghost and Mr Chicken for the first time since childhood. I remember it scaring the crap outta me then. Now, not so much

Jenn-I don't really have much in the way of inside jokes. If I think it's funny I pretty much let everyone know.

Wendy-If I ever create a "Big Lick" blob I'll promise to put lots of dogs in it. Oops Jenn, I guess my use of the word "blob" is an inside joke. Head over to Wendy's blob if anyone wants to get it!

Princess- About two years ago my family was driving thru a small Virginia town and discovered an old fashioned movie theater (with balconies and all). It was in the process of being renovated. They were showing "The Phantom Tollbooth" so we hung around and caught the next showing. Brought back a lot of memories.

Scott- I havent read it in years. Maybe I'll head to the library this week and get it for my daughter.

Susan- I'll save "Big Lick" for my next blog

Andromeda- Thanks for stopping by!

Dorky Dad- I have a hard time with names

Craig- He cracks me up too.

CS- You are correct
